WORK FROM HOME: INTERNET TIPS FOR WORKING PROFESSIONALS
Monday, Jun 07, 2021 · 3 minutes
With the nation moving back to the confines of our homes, we have again resorted to remote working. However, the majority of home WiFi networks aren't designed to be used as a workstation. Our home networks also lack sufficient bandwidth and Wi-Fi speed to accommodate all of the data we need to perform our jobs. While your internet might be fast enough to stream Netflix and surf the web, is it fast enough to support video calls with your boss, coworkers, or clients? In the article, we’ve tried to summarize internet tips that you might find useful while working from home.
Your current internet plan will most likely allow you to work from home without too many issues, but if you're looking for a new ISP, you'll want to look for consistent download and upload speeds as well as at least one terabyte (TB) of data per month.
Download speeds indicate how easily you can access information on the internet. websites, Netflix videos, and work email can load faster with faster download speeds.
Upload speeds indicate how easily you can upload information to the internet. Faster upload speeds will not only get the PDF attached to your email in a flash, but they will also keep you looking picture-perfect during your Zoom call.
Anything you do on the internet consumes data, with streaming and uploading large files consuming the most. Most internet providers give you at least one terabyte of data per month, but some go all out and give you unlimited data.
Below are recommended download and upload speeds for some popular work from home apps:##BlogVASBanner##
App | Recommended download speed | Recommended upload speed |
---|---|---|
Zoom1 | 1.2–3 Mbps | 1.2–3 Mbps |
Slack2 | 200 Kbps–4 Mbps | 100 Kbps–600 Kbps |
Skype3 | 30 Kbps–8 Mbps | 30 Kbps–1.5 Mbps |
Cisco Webex4 | 0.5–2.5 Mbps | 0.5–3 Mbps |
Google Hangouts Meet5 | 18 Kbps–3.2 Mbps | 12 Kbps–3.2 Mbps |
If you operate from home, we suggest a minimum download speed of 50 to 100 Mbps and a minimum upload speed of 10 Mbps if you upload big files to the internet. If you're working from home alone and won't be uploading huge files, such as streaming on YouTube, attending video conferences, or providing graphic designs to clients, we think you'll be fine with at least 50 Mbps.
