The year is 2007. YouTube, the colossal video-sharing platform it is today, is in its infancy stage. People mostly upload videos on the platform as a hobby. One such person is an unknown teenager from Canada. He keeps uploading his singing videos on the platform without much thought.

One day, Scooter Braun, a former marketing executive of So So Def Recordings, stumbles upon this unknown teenager’s video. Impressed by the kid's singing, Braun reaches out to him and signs him. One week later, the kid sings for Usher. Fast forward 13 years, and that same teenager is now a global sensation with millions of followers.

This story is about Justin Bieber and how the internet helped him launch his career. There are other instances where the internet has also helped singers and musicians in many ways. Nicki Minaj, Tori Kelly, Halsey, and many more singers and musicians owe their career success to the internet.

From YouTube to Myspace to Instagram to Spotify, the internet has played a major role in helping musicians and singers to showcase their talent to a global audience and get noticed. Many have turned into overnight stars thanks to the power of digital platforms. And this is just one of the many ways the internet has helped musicians and singers. There are countless other benefits of the internet for those in the music industry.

So let us look at how the internet helps musicians and singers grow their careers. Let's begin.

Make Music More Accessible

The Netflix miniseries, 'The Playlist, ' accurately depicts how difficult it was for people to get access to music before the internet. People had to wait for songs to play on MTV or other TV channels. Moreover, they had to go to a music store or buy from catalogues to get their favourite music. Also, they had to buy an entire album, even if only one song they liked.

But once the internet came, it changed everything. Music became available at people's fingertips. People can download singles, albums, or playlists on streaming services at any time. Music was no longer limited to certain channels or stores.

But, during the early years, people had to download music from websites like Napster and LimeWire. This was time-consuming and illegal, as copyright infringement was rampant.

But since then, the music industry has come a long way in making music more accessible to everyone. Now people can instantly stream their favourite music from platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and many more. The internet has made it easier for people to discover new music and save them for their listening pleasure.

In short, musicians and singers can now make their music more easily accessible to their target audience and give them a better experience.

Build Audience and Monetize Music

The internet has also quickly helped musicians and singers build a loyal fan base. Platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter have become effective tools for artists to reach out to a wider audience. These platforms have powerful analytics which allow them to understand the kind of music their fans prefer and create content accordingly.

Apart from this, the internet also provides them with a platform to monetize their music. With platforms like Patreon and Bandcamp, musicians and singers can use the internet to monetize their music and generate revenue from it. Moreover, YouTube pays artists to monetize their videos as well. Similarly, Spotify offers artists a way to monetize their music through its streaming services.

This has significantly increased the earning potential of musicians as they don't have to depend solely on concerts or album sales to make money. Thus, the internet has helped musicians and singers build an audience and monetize their music more effectively.

Instant Connections

It is now easier for musicians and singers to connect with their fans and other musicians and music industry professionals. Platforms like Twitter and Instagram make it easier for them to interact with their fans, answer their queries, and build relationships.

At the same time, musicians can connect with other professionals through networking platforms like LinkedIn. They can even use the internet to book gigs and tours or network with other professionals in the industry.

This has made it easier for musicians and singers to build relationships, expand their networks, and get their music to a wider audience. This, in turn, can help them build their career and become successful in the music industry.

Fight Piracy

The music industry faced a major setback due to the rampant piracy of music in the early years. File-sharing platforms and torrents made it easier for people to download and share music without paying for it. This not only hurt the sales of albums but also hit artists hard in terms of the royalties they earned.

But thanks to increased awareness and better security measures, piracy has now gone down significantly. As a result, musicians and singers can now make money from their music without worrying about it being pirated. Moreover, streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music also provide artists with an effective way to make money from their music.

It's a win-win situation for people, too, as they can now listen to their favourite music in high quality without having to download it illegally. They also don't have to wait for their favorite music to be released; they can simply stream it immediately.

Exposure to Global Audience

Earlier artists were somewhat limited in terms of the audience they could reach. Unless they became highly popular like Michael Jackson, Queen, The Beatles, and others, they had to rely mostly on local gigs and tours.

But with the internet, musicians and singers can now reach a global audience without trouble. Platforms like YouTube, SoundCloud, and Bandcamp provide them with an effective way to reach out to a global audience. They can also collaborate with other musicians and singers from around the world to create music that appeals to a global audience.

This has made musicians and singers like Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, Adele, BTS, A.R. Rahman, and countless others global superstars within a short span of time.

Simplify Music Production

Picture this - If a musician wanted to record your music back in the day, they'd have to book a studio and spend money on studio time. And even that process wasn't easy. They needed to have contacts in the industry and deep pockets to afford it.

But now, with technological advancements, musicians can record their music from the comfort of their homes. They can use digital music production tools like Pro Tools, Reason, and Cubase to record their music. Some tools offer royalty-free music and sound effects that can be used to create amazing music.

Moreover, with better internet speeds, musicians can collaborate with other musicians or producers from any part of the world. They can also upload their music online and get feedback from other musicians or fans.

All this has made it easier for musicians and singers to record, produce and release their music quickly and affordably.

More Control Over Music

Thanks to the internet, musicians and singers now have more control over their music. They can decide how they want to release their music, who they want to collaborate with, and even how they want to market it.

They can choose to release their music independently or look for a record label to represent them. They can also connect with other musicians and work together on projects. And they don't have to worry about their music getting lost in the shuffle as many online platforms can help them promote their music.

For example, many budding musicians and singers are taking to platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Spotify to showcase their music. They can post videos, use hashtags and collaborate with other musicians to get their music heard.

But most importantly, they now own their music. They don't have to worry about anyone else taking credits or royalties for it, as they retain the rights to all their music.

Focus On The Music Video As Well

Music videos weren't as popular in the 60s, 70s, 80, and even the early 90s. While there were some amazing music videos, they didn't really impact the overall success of an artist or their song.

But with the internet, that's changed. Music videos are now just as important (maybe even more important) than the music itself. Platforms like YouTube and Vimeo have made it easier for musicians to show off their music videos.

They can also use the internet to create stunning visuals for their music videos. They can use tools like Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro, and more to create amazing animations and graphics that add an extra layer of depth to their music videos.

All this is helping musicians and singers create music that appeals to a global audience and makes a lasting impression. And once a music video goes viral, the artist's popularity will skyrocket.

Take a look at Gangnam Style by Psy or any music videos by BTS for proof. They all went viral and propelled their artists to global fame within a short span of time. Similarly, look at the craze behind the song 'Naatu Naatu' from RRR among the western audience. People are dancing in the theatres on this one.

Accelerate The Push Towards Digital

Finally, the internet has also accelerated the push towards digital music consumption. People can now stream and download their favourite songs with a few taps on their phones or laptops.

Services like iTunes, Spotify, and Apple Music have made it easier for people to find and listen to music. They don't have to search through stores to find their favourite songs. And they can even create playlists with the tap of a button.

As a result, more and more people are consuming music digitally. And this is helping musicians and singers reach wider audiences, as their music is now available to anyone with an internet connection.

Wrapping Up

Overall, the internet has opened up new doors for musicians and singers to make their music available to a larger audience, generate revenue from it, and collaborate with other musicians. It has also made it easier for them to connect with their fans and other music industry professionals.

Moreover, improved security measures and streaming platforms have made it easier for them to fight piracy and monetize their music legally. It wouldn't be wrong to say that the internet has changed the music industry forever and has made it easier for musicians and singers to become successful.
