You are not alone if you are intimidated by the internet purchasing process. Most internet service providers (ISPs) make it as difficult as possible to understand what speeds you require (both download and upload), how much you will actually pay each month, and what type of equipment you need to rent or buy.

Aside from that, you'll want to think about contracts, data caps, and installation. It's a lot to consider, but we've broken it down for you so you can be confident that you're getting exactly what you need at the best price possible.

Determine the speeds you require.

To ensure that you select the appropriate internet speed plan, you should be familiar with the various internet speed types. These include download and upload speeds, as well as latency. Understanding the three types of internet speeds will assist you in determining the speeds you require.

Download rates

Most consumers are most concerned with download speeds, which are advertised by internet service providers. Download speeds are the amount of time it takes to download data in order to perform tasks such as watching videos, browsing the internet, or downloading files. The faster the speeds, the faster these tasks can be completed. The greater the number of devices connected to the internet, the faster the download speeds will be required.

Upload rates

Only a few providers provide symmetrical download/upload speed plans like ACT Fibernet. Most providers will have upload speeds that are significantly slower than download speeds. Because most people use the internet to download, fast upload speeds are not as important as fast download speeds. However, if you regularly live stream or play games, make video calls, send emails, or upload files, you'll want to make sure you have adequate upload speeds.

Latency

Latency, also known as the ping test, is another method for determining the quality of an internet connection. While upload and download speeds indicate the amount of data that can be transmitted at one time, latency measures how quickly data can be transferred from one location to another. The greater the distance your internet signals must travel, the greater the latency. This is why satellite internet has such high latency; internet signals are sent all the way from space, resulting in particularly long lag-times.
