How many times has it happened that you have begun downloading a high-definition movie with a file size that runs in GBs, and after a few minutes, the ETA keeps increasing or decreasing? This can be quite frustrating as you’re left wondering when the movie will be ready for you to watch.

Moreover, you start thinking about why your broadband speed fluctuates even though you were promised a certain upload or download speed. You call your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and complain about your ordeal.

The customer support agent on the other end of the call explains to you that broadband speed tends to vary from time to time based on a variety of factors. They calmly explain that such fluctuations are common in the digital world.

But what does this mean for you? Sure, they have tried to explain it away, but you still want to know why it happens and how you can remedy the situation. Let’s delve into this further and understand broadband speed and what factors can affect it—and, more importantly—how you can keep them under control.

What Is Broadband Speed?

Broadband speed, also known as internet speed, in simple terms, is the rate at which data is transferred from the internet to your computer and vice versa. This speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps) or gigabits per second (Gbps). The higher this number is, the faster your connection will be.

The Need For Speed

Why does broadband speed matter so much? The answer lies in the type of online activities we engage in daily. Simple tasks like web browsing or sending emails require relatively low speeds.

However, as we dive into more data-intensive activities like streaming high-definition videos, playing online games, or engaging in video conferences, the demand for higher speeds becomes evident. Broadband speed is the invisible force that determines whether your video streams buffer, your games lag, or your virtual meetings experience pixelated faces.

ACT Broadband is proud to offer broadband plans with speeds up to 1 Gbps. Whether you’re a casual web surfer, a hardcore gamer, or an avid video streamer, these speeds put ACT at the forefront of broadband providers in India. With a presence in over 20+ cities across the country, you can enjoy high-speed internet wherever you are!

The Components of Broadband Speed

Broadband speed is composed of two critical components: upload and download speeds. The download speed dictates how quickly data flows from the internet to your device, influencing activities like streaming and downloading.

Upload speed, on the other hand, governs the rate at which data travels from your device to the internet, affecting tasks like uploading files and video conferencing.

In addition to the upload and download speeds, there are two metrics that can impact your overall internet experience: latency and jitter.

Latency refers to the time it takes for a packet of information, or data, to travel from one point to another. Low latency means a faster response time, while high latency can cause delays in loading webpages.

Jitter is the variation of latency overtime on a network. High jitter means that packets of data are arriving out of order, resulting in choppy audio and video calls or slow page loading times.

The Myth of "Up to" Speeds

You might have encountered the term "up to" when checking out various internet plans. It's essential to understand that this doesn't guarantee a constant top speed. The "up to" speed represents the maximum your connection can reach under ideal conditions. Various factors can influence the actual speed you experience.

Factors Causing Fluctuations In Broadband Speeds

As mentioned earlier, the 'up to' speeds advertised by your internet provider are not indicative of the actual bandwidth you experience. Several factors can cause fluctuations in your broadband speeds, including the following:

Type of Internet Connection

One of the most significant factors when it comes to speed is the type of internet connection you have. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), copper cable, and fiber optic cable connections all offer different speeds, so make sure you select the one that suits your needs. Fiber optic cable connections tend to offer higher speeds compared to DSL or cable connections, so if you’re looking for a faster connection, this could be the option to go for.

Network Congestion

Another factor that can fluctuate your broadband speeds is network congestion. This occurs when too many users are attempting to use the same internet connection at the same time. As a result, bandwidth is spread thin and you end up with slower speeds or fluctuating speeds, depending upon the demand on the network. To avoid this, you can consider switching to a plan with higher speeds and wide bandwidth, or speak to your internet provider about how they manage congestion periods and if there’s anything else you can do to improve your speed.

Modem Performance

The performance of your modem also plays an important role in broadband speeds. If it’s old, outdated, or past its prime, it may not be able to keep up with your current connection. It’s worth investing in a modern modem that can handle the speeds you want; this is especially true if you have recently upgraded your plan and are expecting faster speeds. A dual-band modem is ideal as it will provide you with greater options for connecting to different networks, such as 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

Wired vs. Wireless Connections

If you have the option of using a wired connection, this may be more reliable than a wireless one. However, you should also consider that wireless connections are usually much easier to use. Many modern routers have been designed to be more reliable and capable of providing a steady connection, but it’s still worth considering whether or not you need the extra speed that a wired connection can provide.

Distance From the Modem

The distance between your modem and computer can also have an impact on the speed of your connection. The further away you are, the weaker the WiFi signal will be. You may need to use a range extender or repeater to ensure that you get a strong enough connection throughout your home. This could be necessary for certain activities such as streaming video or gaming.

Interference From Other Devices

Other devices on your network can also affect your connection speed. If you have a wireless connection, then microwave ovens, cordless phones, and other electronic devices can interfere with Wi-Fi signals. This can lead to slow connection speeds or even dropped connections. To combat this, try moving electronic devices away from the router and modem. You may also need to reduce the number of devices connected to your network.

Device Limitations

Your devices can also have an effect on your connection speed. Older computers, phones, and tablets may not be able to support the faster speeds available from newer routers and modems. This means that even if you have high-speed internet access, it won't matter if your devices can't keep up with the connection you're trying to use. To fix this problem, you may need to upgrade your hardware or purchase newer devices.

ISP Infrastructure

Finally, your internet connection could also be affected by the infrastructure of your ISP. If your ISP's infrastructure isn't sufficient to handle the amount of traffic in your area, then you may experience slower speeds as well. In this case, there is usually little that can be done unless you switch to a different ISP with better infrastructure. However, if you're already paying for high-speed internet access and not getting it, then you should contact your ISP to discuss the issue and see if they can offer you a solution.

It's important to remember that, while high-speed internet access is available in many areas, it won't necessarily be reliable unless all of the factors mentioned above are adequately addressed. By understanding more about how internet connections work and what could potentially limit your connection speeds, you can then make changes to improve your connection quality and ensure that you are getting the internet speeds that you pay for.

Speed Test Results

It’s important to keep an eye on your speed test results so you can determine if there are any issues with your connection. If you notice a significant change in performance, then it could be due to an issue with the router or modem or even because of external factors such as interference from other devices. You should consider running a speed test to check your connection and identify any issues.

Carrying Out Speed Test

There are several different speed test tools available, and most of them are free to use. It is important to make sure you are using a reputable provider for your speed tests, as some could be unreliable.

Speedtest by Ookla and Fast.com are two of the most popular, free services that are widely trusted. The process of testing your connection is fairly straightforward. If you're using speed test, simply click on the 'Go' button on the main page and it will start testing your speed. On the other hand, Fast.com starts the internet speed test automatically when you enter the website.

Both speed test services will provide you with an overview of your connection speeds after the testing is complete. This includes upload and download speeds, as well as Latency (ping rate). The results should help you identify any issues that may be causing slow internet speeds. You may also consider running multiple tests to ensure that the results are accurate.
