As the gig economy continues to grow, more and more people are turning to freelancing as a way to earn a living. Whether graphic designers, writers, or software developers, one thing that all freelancers have in common is the need for a fast and reliable internet connection. In today's digital age, having a high-speed internet connection is no longer a luxury. It's a necessity.

But with so many options available, it can be difficult to know which one to choose. One of the biggest debates in the world of internet service is whether to opt for traditional internet or to upgrade to high-speed fibre internet.

This article compares the two and explores why more and more freelancers are choosing high-speed fibre internet.

Understanding Fibernet

Fibernet, also known as fiber optic internet, uses fibre optic cables to transmit data. These cables are made of thin glass fibers that are bundled together to create a cable. Unlike traditional copper or coaxial cables, which use electrical signals to transmit data, fiber optic cables use light signals.

When data is sent over fiber internet, it is first converted into light signals by a device called an optical network terminal (ONT). These light signals are then sent through the fiber optic cables to the internet service provider's (ISP) data centre. At the data centre, the light signals are converted back into data and sent out to the internet.

Advantages of Fibernet Connections

Fibernet offers a plethora of benefits for freelancers that can help make their work more efficient and productive.

Faster Speeds

Fibernet provides faster download and upload speeds compared to traditional internet, which is especially important for freelancers who rely on fast internet for work-related tasks such as video conferencing, uploading and downloading large files, and cloud-based applications.

Greater Bandwidth

Fiber internet has a higher bandwidth capacity than traditional internet, which means it can support multiple device connections simultaneously without any compromise on the internet speed or performance.

Reliability

Fiber internet is less susceptible to outages and downtime compared to traditional internet, which means that freelancers can work without interruptions and stay productive.

Better Latency

Fiber internet has lower latency than traditional internet, which means that there is less delay between sending and receiving data. This is especially important for tasks such as online gaming and video conferencing, where delays can cause lag and poor video quality.

Security

Fiber internet is more secure than traditional internet because it is more difficult to intercept and hack fiber optic signals. This is important for freelancers who need to protect sensitive client information and data.

Understanding Traditional Internet

Traditional internet, also known as copper or coaxial internet, uses copper or coaxial cables to transmit data. These cables have been used for decades and were the primary method of providing internet service to homes and businesses. While traditional internet has been widely available, it has several drawbacks compared to fiber internet.

Disadvantages of Traditional Internet

Traditional internet comes with several caveats that make it a less attractive option for freelancers. They include:

Low Bandwidth Capacity

One of the main disadvantages of the traditional internet is its limited bandwidth capacity. Traditional internet has a lower bandwidth capacity compared to fiber internet, which means that it can struggle to support multiple devices and users simultaneously without sacrificing speed or performance. Additionally, the traditional internet is more susceptible to interference from other electronic devices, which can cause slower speeds and connection issues.

Slower Speeds

Another disadvantage of traditional internet is its slower speeds compared to fiber internet. While traditional internet can provide adequate speeds for basic browsing and emailing, it may not be suitable for tasks such as video conferencing, streaming high-quality video, and uploading and downloading large files.

Less Reliable

Finally, traditional internet may be less reliable than fiber internet. Because the traditional internet uses electrical signals to transmit data, it is more susceptible to outages and downtime than fiber internet, which uses light signals. This can frustrate freelancers relying on a consistent internet connection to stay productive.

Why Freelancers Prefer High-Speed Fiber Internet

Internet speed is crucial for freelancers, as it directly impacts their ability to work efficiently and effectively. Slow internet speeds can lead to frustration, wasted time, and missed deadlines. Faster internet speeds, on the other hand, can help freelancers stay productive and increase their overall profits.

Let's look at an example to compare the advantages of fiber internet versus traditional internet. Mr John is a video editor and, given the current state of technology, is required to download, edit, and upload it to the client within a few hours. The video file size is about 10 GB.

With traditional internet, it would take Mr John several hours just to download the video file, leaving him with very little time to edit and upload it. The overall process can take a day or two, which means that the client may not be happy with the late delivery.

On the other hand, if Mr John had access to a fast fibernet connection, such as the one offered by ACT, he would be able to download the file quickly (anywhere between just five minutes to half an hour) and have plenty of time to edit and upload it within the same day. This means that he can meet the client’s expectations on time and potentially make more money.

Similarly, other freelancers, such as web developers, graphic designers, and bloggers, can also benefit from high-speed fiber internet. They can easily download and upload large files, share files with clients, and communicate with clients without any lag or delays. In the long run, this can help them take on more projects and lead to professional growth.

How Freelancers Can Optimize Their High-Speed Fiber Internet Connection

In addition to the advantages of fiber internet already discussed, there are also several steps that freelancers can take to optimize their connection. They are:

Update the Router and Devices

Make sure that the router and devices are updated with the latest software and firmware. This will ensure that they are compatible with high-speed fiber internet and freelancers can take full advantage of its benefits.

Use a Wired Connection

A wired connection is more stable and provides faster speeds than a wireless connection. Connect the computer or laptop directly to the router using an Ethernet cable for the best performance.

Place the Router in a Central Location

Placing the router in a central location can improve coverage and signal strength throughout the workspace. Plus, keep the router away from walls, furniture, and other electronics that may interfere with the signal.

Optimize Wi-Fi Settings

Adjust the Wi-Fi settings to optimize performance. Change the channel on the router to avoid interference from other nearby routers, and use the 5GHz band for faster speeds. On the other hand, a 2.4GHz band is better for a larger coverage area.

Use a VPN

A VPN can help secure the internet connection and protect the user's privacy while working online. It can also improve performance by reducing latency and speeding up uploads and downloads. There are several reputable VPN providers available, so freelancers should make sure to research and choose the one that best suits their needs.

Limit Background Activities

Limit background activities such as downloads and streaming while working to ensure that the internet connection is dedicated to work-related tasks. A major culprit is Windows Update, which can be disabled or scheduled for when the freelancer is not working.

Clear Cache

Clearing the cache can improve internet performance by freeing up memory and reducing load times. Freelancers should, therefore, regularly clear their cache to optimize their internet connection.

Upgrade the Equipment

Investing in high-quality equipment such as a router, modem, or network card can improve performance and speed up the internet connection. Freelancers should look for equipment that is compatible with high-speed fiber internet and has good reviews.

How to Choose the Best Fiber Connection

Fiber connection internet is an increasingly popular choice for high-speed internet connections. However, with so many options available, it can be difficult for freelancers to know how to choose the best fiber connection for their needs.

Here are some factors to consider when selecting a fiber connection:
